WITH hope of finding survivors, stretched rescue teams toiled through the night in Turkey and Syria, searching for signs of life in the rubble of thousands of buildings toppled by a catastrophic earthquake.

The death toll rose today to more than 11,000 and looks set to climb even higher with many still missing.

Amid calls for the Turkish government to send more help to the disaster zone, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan toured a tent city in Kahramanmaras where people forced from their homes are staying.

He conceded that there had been shortfalls early on in the disaster response but vowed that no-one would “be left in the streets.”

But while there are said to be some 60,000 aid workers in the areas of Turkey hit by the quake, many people are still waiting for help.

“We don’t have a tent, we don’t have a heating stove, we don’t have anything. Our children are in bad shape. We are all getting wet under the rain and our kids are out in the cold,” Aysan Kurt told reporters.

The People’s Labour Party of Turkey said: “Unfortunately, the most critical hours of the earthquake for people struggling to survive under the rubble was wasted. In freezing conditions, lives were extinguished due to hypothermia and frost.”

In Syria, aid efforts have been hampered by the ongoing war and the isolation of the rebel-held region along the border, which is surrounded by Russia-backed government forces.

Syria itself is the subject of strict Western economic sanctions linked to the war. An increasing number of observers are calling for the embargo to be lifted.

Journalist Richard Medhurst slammed the failure of United States President Joe Biden to lift sanctions on Syria, saying: “Syria’s earthquake victims need help. That means lifting sanctions.”
